Importance of Moving to HTTPS
July 21st, 2018
Have you been wondering what all of this HTTPS talk is about? The web is moving to HTTPS at a fast pace, thanks in part to Google's push.
HTTPS is a method for providing secure communication within websites. If your URL starts with "http://", it means that values entered, such as User Id's and Passwords are susceptible to prying-eyes since they are not being transmitted securely. If your URL already begins with "https://" you're likely good to go!
Thankfully, moving from HTTP to HTTPS is pretty simple with many web hosts, including SiteGround. In fact, you can perform a simple test to see how difficult it will be. Change your URL from "http://" to "https://" and reload the page. If the page loads correctly, and without errors and warnings, just contact your web provider and have them force https everywhere. Once finished, anyone accessing your website will be doing so securely. Otherwise, it's a bit more complicated and you may have to pay for an SSL cert. through your web host.
Another issue with HTTP is that Google has been lowering the rank of these websites since 2014. Due to this lower rank, you may be losing out on potential customers as well!
