The Lead Magnet phase is the first phase of the sales funnel. In this phase, you want to take people who know nothing about your business, and get them onto your list, or into your CRM. A lead can be as simple as a contact email address, or phone number. There are many strategies for lead generation and the number of them is only limited by your imagination. Let's look at a few specific ways you can generate leads and grow your customer base!

Start Blogging!

One method for lead generation is through blogging. In order to have an effective blog, you need to know who your target audience is and make your blog posts relevant to you them. Through blogging, you are creating valuable content for your target audience. With every new post, you are expanding a "net" for catching leads, via search engines, such as Google. But, before you begin blogging, make sure to know your target audience and gear each post to them. Casting a net for search engines is great, but in order to get the most out of your blog, you need to do something else too. Allow visitors to subscribe to your blog, using a reputable email service such as MailChimp, and every time you write a post, they'll be notified. This helps to keep them engaged with your business.

Give a Free Gift!

Another method for generating leads is to give something away for free! Right now, you may be thinking that you have nothing to give away, but I bet you can come up with something! Technically, you're giving something away, in exchange for their contact information. So what can you give away? It's important that this item has actual value to your target audience. Let's take a look at a practical lead generator for a Shoe Store, whose target audience are runners between the ages of 21 and 50. It wouldn't make sense to give away crayons, because we aren't targeting children, and the store is targeting athletes, not artists. But, what if you gave away information on the most common running forms and which style of shoe is best for each? The former example may cause people to go buy coloring books, but the latter will drive your target audience back your store! Knowing your target audience is crucial to having a successful sales funnel.

There is another marketing principle at play here as well called The Law of Reciprocity. This law states that when you give a person something of value, they feel compelled to give something in return. In fact, I was just at the Otoe County Fair parade the other day and this law was on full display! Every company or organization handed out something free (sunglasses, potato chips, candy, frisbees), while getting their company exposure, and getting some people to reciprocate by giving them their business in the future.
